It’s been a locked in four years at Lake Hāwea Station with our steadfast team across farming and tourism. But, as with the vividly contrasting seasons in our mountain home change is inevitable for the land itself and the people upon it.
Long term Shepherd (five years) Lochy Hutton will engrave his name on the walls of Historic Packhorse Cottage with Shepherds throughout the centuries. He will then head off on that right of passage - an OE taking his knowledge to the huge sheep and cattle ranches of Australia. Tony our much loved General (our RIP) after years of being our first cry!!! is off to manage his development projects - Tony and his family are our family. Soon Angus and Ruby will join us on farm. Angus will bring his knowledge in Merino genetics and a new team of working dogs will also call LHS home.
Grace is back in the district calling in to cuddle the pigs and Jess and Reiko continue making magic in welcoming our guests. Mitch our new guide is opening hearts and minds to the biodiversity and regenerative journey and Richie will be home soon with tales of wrestling crocodiles and side stepping snakes.
Finn is now Dr Finn Ross and is in London working on his ocean alkalinity project. But still consults on the environmental stewardship of LHS. Gabe has graduated from Otago and is launching Lake Hāwea Station Hunting in the 2026 season and Weekend Mish is thriving as is Weekend Mish apparel.
Annie, Jussie and Geoff continue to steer the experiences of all those who may wish to engage with the station, as a residential guest, a student, a charity, a school, a thought IP group or a film or television production. Chef Dane, Jenny and beloved Tommy will, in the spring, plant Tommy’s placenta on the station honouring us all with this eternal connection. These are the moments which literally ground us and bond us for life no matter where we may roam. In some way once you spend time in this purposeful place … it always calls you home.
We are downing old gnarly pine trees to make way for new growth and we are farewelling beloved team members and welcoming new ones.
Through it all Jack, our farm manager, and his wife Mandy run the farming operation with vision and grace. In their off grid, sun soaked residence soon the very reason we are the worlds first B Corp Certified Sheep farm, the heart of our regenerative philosophy and the essence of why we became our countries first certified Carbon Positive Farm will be apparent when a baby whose future we are fighting for will cry and giggle and grow in this beautiful place which belongs to each of us who have given it our time and care - our Aroha.
Good things, great things and the ties which bind us. For all this we are grateful.
