Ripples Across the Nation: The Inaugural Aotearoa Stone Skimming Championship

A reflection crystal clear as the waters of Lake Hawea itself, the Aotearoa Stone Skimming Championship, presented by NOVUS Glass, created history in the most ebullient of ways. With the 16th May dawning calm and windless, 150 revellers of the skimming art and a further 200 spectators gathered lakefront to see who would be crowned the inaugural Aotearoa Stone Skimming champions. To describe the event in human form, its head would be charity - to raise over $35,000 for Melanoma NZ, the local community it’s backbone - over 45 businesses raising skimming to the mountains above, and the (somewhat) flailing arms being those incredible competitors.

With entertaining interludes such as the “Bledisthrow” and “Old Tossers” providing captivating moments of spontaneity, relaxation ensued from the Stoked Stainless Hot Tubs and giant Wilson & Dorset Bean Bags - set amongst that showstopper of the Gather and Gold VIP tent.

By the time 3pm skipped by, it seemed the entire nation was at tipping point. It was finals time - what followed can only be described as a divine skimming script. Abbey MacDonald, who threw an astonishing 73.84m in round robin, reinforced her position amongst the pantheon of New Zealand greats by securing the Open Women’s Final. Up step Jay Reeve, cometh the hour, cometh the man. From nothing, to something, to everything. Jay resisted immense pressure from his fellow male competitors to take out the final, though not without drama - as the final skimmer Cam threw further but out of bounds.

Skimming is a ruthless sport, where your reputation rests on your last, and you are only as good as your next. We cannot wait to see how our inaugural national champions do at the World Championship held on Easdale Island, Scotland on September 5th. What a day for the nation, and what a day for Melanoma NZ.
